My name is Marc Rieu and I was born on the 1st of November 1978 in Maastricht. Already on a young age, I got acquainted with art. Being a toddler, I watched catalogues of museums and monographies of famous artists, taking them from my parents’ bookshelves. 1990 was the Vincent van Gogh year, I was in the last class of primary school; a television documentary about the world reknown painter made me decide to do something with art.
I’ve studied history of art and archeology in Nijmegen during the 1998-2006 period, making several excursions and trips to Florence, Milan, London and Paris. My final thesis was about two of my favourite landscape artists, the German Romantic Caspar David Friedrich and the Norwegian Johan Christian Dahl. After giving lessons of art history, I chose to dedicate myself to (landscape) painting completely back in 2008.
Caspar David Friedrich is one of my examples: the mysterious atmosphere in his work – mountain tops covered in mist, sunsets above the endless sea, desolated forests – is something I really appreciate! Besdides the landscapes of Friedrich, I’m very fond of the paintings by Ivan Shishkin and Peder Mork Monsted. In order to get more qualified, I took master classes from Gerard Huysman, Simon Balyon and Karin Smits.
Enjoy my paintings: in case of any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me!
